COFTY - I'm with you about Gould, and I don't doubt the endeavors of researchers in the field of evo/psy. However, I think working from a cognitive perspective back to evolutionary theory will ultimately yield stronger results.

Evolutionary psychology?
by Laika ini've read a little bit of work from the field of evolutionary psychology, but nearly all of this stuff comes across as pseudo-scientific bs to me.
much of this stuff just seems to me to be a case of preferring a particular human behaviour over another one, and then saying that this is what nature intended with a story about how it 'evolved'.
a lot of evolutionary psychologists also seem to use evolutionary psychology as cover for their misogyny or racism.. i think most of our behaviours are socialised rather than genetic.. i am hardly an expert here however so could, of course, be completely wrong.

OUBLIETTE - good catch. Without good philosophy, good science is impossible.

Thanks for the preview BLONDIE.
Attended the "special talk" and stayed for about half the WT.
My favorite part was a comment from someone's loose-cannon bible study, who related a lengthy experience about how praying in traffic saved her life in a terrible highway collision. YESSSSS!!!!
Of course, it met with the nervous titters of the congregation who were left confused as to what exactly the hell god is doing anyway.
Always refreshing to hear the voice of someone not completely brainwashed (yet) even if they are utterly incoherent.

I am no expert in evolutionary psychology, but I think a healthy skepticism about it is understandable.
Ultimately, if you believe we are material beings, and that "mind" is a result of natural, material processes, yes, to think of mind in evolutionary terms makes sense.
However, I think that at this point, we do not have enough information about how cognitive processes work to make sweeping generalizations about the efffects of evolution on human behavior/cognition.
That is why COGNITIVE SCIENCE ROCKS!!!!!!!

The REAL reason for the elder and ms appointment change......
by EndofMysteries inas seen in recent posts, beginning later this year appointments and deletions of elders and ms will only happen through the circuit overseer.
this means that individual congregations and elders have no say anymore.
if the gb want only certain people in or out, they tell the co and he makes it happen.

Yes. What JOE134CD said.
When the court says "Who appointed this child molester as elder?" the WT now will be able to say "Oh, it was that guy who's 70 years old and completely broke living in a trailer in the desert in New Mexico. That was HIS decision, not ours. "
ALSO
It will come in real handy with the new "donation" arrangement.
CO: "Brothers X, Y, and Z. . . . You don't want to turn over the hundreds of thousands of $$$$ in your cong. accts to the society?"
BROTHERS XYZ: "No."
CO: "Delete, delete, delete. Brothers, you are dismissed. .... Now, what do the rest of you have to say about turning over your cong. acct. to the society?"

HOSER - yes! I forgot to say, she also doesn't "advertise" her MJ use - just a few people close to her know.

I know of one instance of this in CA. The person had problems with pain and got a prescription for MJ lollipops to suck on, thus avoiding the mandate on smoking. So far as I know, the person is still in "good standing" but does not have any privileges (although they had none to start with - read: it's a woman)

Good topic, something I need to get a better handle on myself.
I know it's possible, because for the first half of my adult life, I had no problem with alcohol. An opened bottle of wine would go bad before I drank whole thing.
Then I became an elder.
Pretty quickly, my opened bottles of wine would never go bad - gone in a couple of days. Then it was a bottle a night. Then I bought bigger bottles!
After my breakdown and "stepping down", the pattern persisted. My nerves were shot and it was the only thing that helped at all. All the meds pretty much sucked.
Now I'm in a FAAAR better place: I know TTATT; I'm fading; saw a psychologist for almost 2 years; my wife supports me and is seeing TTATT for herself; I'm going to school. This is all great stuff! But I still know I still drink way more than I ought.
It isn't easy to slow down once you're in the habit, but all of the above suggestions seem reasonable.

Letters to the Body of Elders (BOE) - Change in Letterhead
by Oubliette inwithin the last few hours, two separate posters, watchtower87 and pixel, independently posted news of a april 22nd, 2014 letter to the boe regarding a change in how elders are to be appointed and deleted:.
boe - pdf - confidential 2014-04-22 adjustment in process for appointing elders and minisletter to boe: adjustment in process for appointing elders and ministerial servantswhat i found very interesting is the letterhead and the signature.
they are both from "the governing body of jehovah's witnesses" and not from "the christian congregation of jehovah's witnesses.".

Yes it is unique, but no, it is not the first time that letters with Governing Body letterhead have been distributed.
The last letter (I know of) that had GB letterhead was the one dissolving all book studies.

WATCHTOWERFREE - you haven't been keeping up on your WT study editions:
"All of us must be ready to obey any instructions we may receive, whether these appear sound from a strategic or human standpoint or not."
